N.Y. mayor restores news-media access to crime info

By The Associated Press
08.11.08

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown has ordered police to restore news-media access to crime information following complaints from a newspaper.

The Buffalo News said that in recent months, basic information including the location of incidents had been removed from a police department computer accessed by reporters, and that department brass had greatly limited the number of people allowed to talk to the press.

Brown on Aug. 7 said he wasn’t told about the police policy change and overrode it. He said he agreed with concerns voiced by residents who want to know where crimes happen.

Buffalo News Editor Margaret Sullivan said what’s important is that the public will now have the information it needs.
